This counter is updated automatically and is from www.iraqbodycount.org. It is world's only independent and comprehensive public database of media-reported civilian deaths in Iraq. Casualty figures are derived from a comprehensive survey of online media reports from recognized sources. Where these sources report differing figures, the range (a minimum and a maximum) are given. This method is also used to deal with any residual uncertainty about the civilian or non-combatant status of the dead. All results are independently reviewed and error-checked by at least three members of the Iraq Body Count project team before publication. You may view the complete database with details here.

NDRN Warns Empty Promises Threaten Returning Troops

WASHINGTON —The Labor Department has awarded a $99,000 non-competitive grant
to help veterans uprooted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita find jobs.

"Homeless veterans face special challenges in rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of the two hurricanes," said Charles B. Ciccolella, assistant secretary of labor for veterans' employment and training. "This grant will help veterans who are resettling in several Texas communities access the job training and placement services they need to find work and build a better life."

American GI Forum, National Veterans Outreach Program Inc., San Antonio, will receive the emergency funding for a grant period ending June 30 to service the Texas communities of Beaumont, Port Arthur and Houston.

Administered by the Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service, the Veterans Workforce Investment Program grant is intended to help 34 veterans and place 24 of them in jobs for a 71 percent entered employment rate at an average wage of $9.82 an hour.

Veterans Workforce Investment Program grants help veterans from targeted groups overcome employment barriers and ease their transition into unsubsidized jobs. Through these programs, veterans receive skills assessment, individual job counseling, labor market information, classroom or on-the-job training, skills upgrading and retraining, placement assistance and crucial follow-up services.

Veterans receiving assistance under these programs may also be eligible for services under other Workforce Investment Act programs for economically disadvantaged or dislocated workers.
