National Cancer Survivors Day Is More Than Just a Party

Thursday, June 01, 2017

2017 NCSD logoYes, National Cancer Survivors Day® is a celebration – a worldwide Celebration of Life that is held on the first Sunday in June. But it is so much more than just a party.

National Cancer Survivors Day® is the one day each year that communities across the globe come together to acknowledge the cancer survivors in their community, to raise awareness of the ongoing challenges cancer survivors face because of their disease, and – most importantly – to celebrate life. NCSD also provides an opportunity for cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate the milestones they’ve achieved, and acknowledge the family members, friends, and healthcare professionals who have supported them along the way.

National Cancer Survivors Day® celebrations will be as diverse as the communities where the events are being held. There will be motivational speeches, health fairs, cancer survivor parades, carnivals, block parties, art exhibits, cancer awareness walks, inspirational programs, and more. Cancer survivors will share their unique stories of how surviving cancer has affected their lives. And communities will come together to stand with these survivors and make a commitment to help find ways to lessen the burdens a cancer diagnosis brings.

Who is a cancer survivor?

The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. National Cancer Survivors Day® offers communities an opportunity to show that they have a valuable and vital cancer survivor population and make a commitment to addressing the challenges of cancer survival.

Join the celebration.

On National Cancer Survivors Day®, we will celebrate life. And we will rejoice in how far we’ve come in cancer survivorship, as cancer survivors are living longer after cancer diagnosis than ever before.

But we will also use this day to draw attention to the challenges cancer survivors still face, and to advocate for more resources, research, and cancer survivor-friendly legislation to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life. Because life after cancer is about more than just surviving; it’s about living well.

Join the millions of cancer survivors around the world as we celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day® and help us raise awareness of the challenges of cancer survival.
