Let’s Get Physical – Ideas for Planning a Fitness-Themed National Cancer Survivors Day Event

Friday, April 25, 2014

Many NCSD event coordinators choose to plan their Cancer Survivors Day event around a central theme. And while you certainly don’t need a theme in order to celebrate life after cancer, having a theme for your NCSD event can add to the excitement of the celebration. That said, we thought we’d give you a little NCSD “themespiration” to get your creative juices flowing.

Themespiration – Let’s Get Physical

Our featured National Cancer Survivors Day theme is “Let’s Get Physical.” As you may have guessed, this theme is all about highlighting the importance of physical fitness for cancer survivors. So grab your sweatbands, your jogging shoes, and your water bottle – and let’s get physical.

Get Everyone Pumped Up

A great way to get cancer survivors pumped up about fitness is by blasting some high-energy music. Give these tunes a try:

• “Let’s Get Physical” by Olivia Newton-John
• "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C&C Music Factory
• "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" by Kelly Clarkson
• “Gonna Fly Now (Rocky Theme Song)” by Bill Conti
• “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera

More Than Just Pumping Iron

Physical fitness, especially for cancer survivors, involves more than just pumping iron so you can show off your muscles. A fitness-themed National Cancer Survivors Day event is a good opportunity to educate cancer survivors on the role physical fitness plays in cancer survivorship, as well as to offer tips on how to incorporate fitness into their daily lives. You can book a keynote speaker to discuss exercise during and after cancer or offer a question-and-answer session with a cancer exercise specialist.

Just make sure you let your Cancer Survivors Day guests know how active your NCSD event will be so they can dress appropriately.

Physical fitness is important for everyone – and maybe even more so for cancer survivors. Your fitness-themed National Cancer Survivors Day celebration may be just the motivation a cancer survivor needs to take that first step toward a more active lifestyle.
