How to Plan a National Cancer Survivors Day Event in 7 Simple Steps

Wednesday, March 02, 2016

Celebrating NCSDOn National Cancer Survivors Day®, tens of thousands of people from across the globe will gather in their local communities to honor cancer survivors, to bring attention to the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship, and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring. It is a day for everyone – cancer survivors, supporters, medical professionals, families, and friends. It’s a day you don’t want to miss.

Bring the National Cancer Survivors Day® celebration to your city this June by following these 7 simple steps.

Step 1: Register Your Event

Registering your National Cancer Survivors Day® event is easy – and free! Go to and fill out a short online registration form. That’s it!

Once you’ve registered, you’ll gain access to the exclusive NCSD Speakers Bureau Roster (which contains contact information for hundreds of nationally recognized celebrities and keynote speakers) plus many other valuable resources, like the official NCSD Merchandise catalog and free copies of Coping with Cancer magazine. Did we mention it’s all free?

Step 2: Solicit Sponsors

National Cancer Survivors Day® – held each year on the first Sunday in June – is a day set aside to honor cancer survivors, but everyone in the community can participate. From sponsoring your Celebration of Life through financial support, to donating goods, services, or event space, local businesses and organizations can contribute in many different ways. All you have to do is ask.

Make sure to let them know you’re hosting a free event for cancer survivors. And don’t forget to recognize (and thank!) local sponsors for their contributions to your NCSD event.

Step 3: Choose a Location

While many NCSD events are held at hospitals and cancer centers, don’t be afraid to get creative with your location. Think amusement park, sports venue, conference center, art museum, or a local church or synagogue. Hey, you could even close off Main Street and have an NCSD block party or parade. Get the whole city involved!

Step 4: Pick a Theme

Planning your event around a central theme is a great way to add interest and create excitement about your celebration. An event theme also helps tie everything together. Check out our themes page for some creative ideas.

Step 5: Plan the Details

Whether you want to host a fun, themed celebration, an educational health fair, or a heart-pumping 5k run/walk, the success of your National Cancer Survivors Day® event depends on how well you handle the details. Making the necessary preparations will ensure that your NCSD event goes off without a hitch. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Decorations  Decorating appropriately will set the tone for your event from the moment guests walk in the door. Hit your local party supply store for décor to accent your NCSD event theme. Then check out the NCSD Merchandise Catalog for NCSD-logo balloons, banners, and other items.
  • Food  You don’t have to serve a gourmet meal, but for many people, food is an integral part of a celebration. Unless your event is centered on dinner or lunch, some simple snacks, hors d’oeuvres, or desserts will do. And make sure to have plenty of water on hand if you’re planning an outdoor event. It will be summer, after all.
  • Entertainment and Activities  Many NCSD event coordinators like to line up a keynote speaker for their Survivors Day celebration. (You can find some great ones in the NCSD Speakers Bureau Roster.) But there are tons of other ways to entertain your guests aside from a motivational speech. Have you thought about live music, dancing, making arts and crafts, professional jugglers, carnival games? Your event can be as unique and creative as you want it to be.

Step 6: Order Official NCSD Merchandise

2016 white t-shirtEvery good party needs souvenirs. When cancer survivors leave your event, give them something to remember it by with official NCSD keepsakes, available to order from the NCSD Merchandise Catalog.

Cancer survivors and supporters will love wearing these comfortable, 100% cotton t-shirts on National Cancer Survivors Day® and for many days to come.

Step 7: Promote Your Event

If cancer survivors don’t know about your National Cancer Survivors Day® event, then they won’t come to your NCSD event. Make sure the cancer survivors in your community don’t miss out – start spreading the word about NCSD several weeks in advance. The NCSD website has the tools you need to get the word out. You can even download customizable press releases and radio PSAs to send to local media.
